Music: Oldies but Goodies

I still listen to 90's music. (Every single day.... Backstreet Boys, Green Day, Britney...):

Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit, TLC’s Waterfall, Spice Girl’s Wannabe and lets not forget Sir-Mix-A-Lot’s Baby Got Back! The 90’s were filled with great groups and artists that made our playlists great to listen too.

Groups That made your Heart Melt

The 90s formed awesome groups that put out catchy and heart felt songs. The 90s gave birth to N Sync, the Backstreet Boys, TLC the Spice Girls and more. Heart throb boy bands and sassy, sexy girl groups made those trips in the car a little less lengthy and a little more fun.

  Backstreets Back

The Backstreet Boys were a dance-pop and R&B group that was originated in Orlando Florida. The group consisted of five members, A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Nick Carter, Kevin Richardson, and Brian Littrell. The group blew up after they released there first album Backstreet Boys in 1993. Their other albums included Backstreets Back, Millennium and Black and Blue. My personal favorite was their 1999 Millennium album. I still remember riding in the back seat of my sisters car on the way to drop her off at college singing “I never wanna hear you sayyyy, I want it that wayyyyy!” Their music was being played at all of the school dances, in every other teenagers car and on radio in their rooms.

Although the Backstreet Boys created some great hits, in my opinion ‘NSYNC was on top when comparing the two. Of course I wouldn’t dare get them confused now, when I was younger I actually had trouble deciphering between the two because they had a similar sound. ‘NSYNC was formed a few years after the Backstreet Boys in 1996 in Orlando Florida. Their five group band consisted of Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone, and Lance Bass. Their first three albums were *NSYNC, No Strings Attached and Celebrity. Collectively between these three albums, they sold over 30 million copies. My favorite songs included ByeByeBye, I want you back, Pop and Its Gonna be Me. Not only was the music catchy the dance moves they did along with their lyrics were iconic.

No scrubs

In my opinion TLC had to be one of the best girl groups of the 90’s. Their songs could have me in tears reminiscing about my feelings and make me want to dance at the same time. TLC was a girl group originated in 1990. The trio included  Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins. A few of their albums included On the TLC tip, CrazySexyCool,  Fan Mail and 3D. My favorite songs all came from their second and third album CrazySexyCool and FanMail. I loved “No Scrubs”, “Waterfall” and  “Creep”. TLC had a great sound, meaningful lyrics and an amazing look that young girls looked up to. Unfortunately, on April 25,2002 this iconic group lost “Left Eye” Lisa Lopes in a car accident.

One-hit Wonders

We all know of those artists that seem to put out all of their talent and heart into one song and then can never seem to duplicate that greatness in another song. Yes, I’m talking about one hit wonders. Although they might not have made it very far in the music industry, we still needed them to make our playlists complete. A few of my favorites were “Mambo” No.5 by Lou Bega, “What is Love” by Haddaway and “Bitter Sweet Symphony” by The Verve. Of course there were many more great pieces of work but this was just a reminder to not forget about them.

The 90’s were a time of great music created by talented people whether they were in a group or just by a solo artist or even never heard of again after they produced their one and only masterpiece. There are so many more fantastic songs and artists that I didn’t mention, so if you finally have a break from school and work one day, go on an adventure to explore the great wonders of music from the 90s.
